Rice-cake mould, kashikata, in the form of
a sea bream, or tai |
Japan, late 19th -- early 20th century
|
A typical two-part cake mould, this one of especially
large size. The sea bream is an auspicious fish and a cake from this mould was for
a celebration, such as a 60th, 72nd, 77th, 88th birthday, or other honorific
occasion. The two sides are held in register with small pegs, and the carving is
nicely detailed.
